Speaking: Tell a Story in 60 Seconds

⏱ 5 Minutes · B1

📖 From Experience

One of the most useful things you can do in English — in an interview, at a dinner, in a job — is tell a short, clear story. Not a long explanation. Not a list of facts. A story: something happened, then something else, and here is what I learned. I have told my story on three continents. This is how I structure it.

📚 The 60-Second Story Structure

Part Purpose Words to use Seconds
Context Set the scene At the time… / Back in… / I was working as… ~10s
Event What happened One day… / Suddenly… / Then… ~25s
Result The outcome As a result… / In the end… ~10s
Lesson What you took away What I learned was… / It taught me… ~15s
✅ Examples

  • Context: When I was managing a team in Sydney…
  • Event: One evening a guest complained before we’d even served the starter…
  • Result: We resolved it, but it took every person on the floor working together.
  • Lesson: What I learned was that a calm voice de-escalates faster than any apology.
✏️ Your Turn

Your turn — tell a 60-second story:

  1. Think of a time something went wrong at work, school, or home.
  2. Use the four-part structure: Context → Event → Result → Lesson.
  3. Say it out loud. Time yourself. Under 60 seconds?
💡 Check Answers
  1. Model: ‘I was 22, working my first shift as a barista. [Context] A customer ordered ten coffees at once and I froze. [Event] My colleague stepped in and we made them together, one by one. [Result] I learned that asking for help is not weakness — it is exactly what the team is for. [Lesson]’
  2. Tips: Use past tenses. Keep the event short. Don’t over-explain. The lesson is the point.
  3. Common error: spending too long on context, rushing the lesson — reverse those proportions.
