LLFE-A11 · Island Life — Describing Where You Live in English
🏝️ Island Life
⏱ 5 minutes · 📚 CELTA-informed · 🎯 Cambridge B1
📖 From the teacher’s desk: La Réunion is unlike anywhere I have ever lived. We have an active volcano (the Piton de la Fournaise), coral reefs, ancient forests, and tropical beaches — all on one island. Saint-Pierre, where Vanessa and I live, has a pace of life that is completely different from Sydney. Describing where you live — honestly, with its trade-offs — is one of the most authentic speaking tasks you can give adult learners.
🎯 By the end of this lesson, you can: describe where you live in detail — geography, lifestyle, advantages and disadvantages.
🔥 Warm Up (1 min)
Imagine someone from the other side of the world asks about where you live. In 3 sentences, how do you describe it? Be honest — include at least one thing that’s less than perfect!
📖 Learn It (2 min)
Vocabulary for describing your location:
“One of the things I love most about living here is…”
“The biggest challenge for newcomers is…”
“Compared to [city/country], the pace of life here is…”
✏️ Try It (2 min)
Write a 6-sentence description of where you live:
- Location (where, what type of place)
- Geography / landscape
- Climate
- The community / people
- One big advantage
- One honest disadvantage
🗝️ Answer Key
Personal response — check you used at least 4 descriptive adjectives from the vocabulary box and that your description includes both a positive AND a negative aspect. Strong descriptions use specific details (names of local features, specific comparisons).
