📖 From the teacher’s desk: Managing multicultural teams in Sydney’s hospitality industry meant navigating strong opinions — about menus, rosters, service standards — every single day. In my mixed-ability classes in Brittany, I noticed that students from some cultures found polite disagreement in English extremely difficult. The language of respectful pushback is one of the most socially important skills in English.

🔥 Warm Up (1 min)
Your colleague says: “We should always agree with the customer, even when they’re wrong.”
Do you agree? How do you respond — politely but honestly?
📖 Learn It (2 min)
Soft disagreement toolkit:
| Phrase | Effect |
|---|---|
| “I see your point, but…” | Shows you listened first |
| “That’s a fair point. However…” | Acknowledges before countering |
| “I’m not sure I agree with that.” | Gentle, tentative disagreement |
| “With respect, I think…” | Formal and firm but respectful |
| “Actually, couldn’t it be argued that…?” | Uses a question to soften |
