In business, in journalism, in bureaucracy — the passive is how English hides the actor. Understanding this is power. You can recognise when someone is being deliberately vague.

Tense	Active	Passive
Present Simple	They serve food.	Food is served.
Past Simple	Someone burned the risotto.	The risotto was burned.
Present Perfect	They have fixed the issue.	The issue has been fixed.
Future Simple	We will review your case.	Your case will be reviewed.
Modal	You should wash the glasses.	The glasses should be washed.

💡 Use by if the agent (the doer) matters: “The book was written by Orwell.”
