ELT365 · Day 249 — Assumed Knowledge

July 12, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea

Lesson plans should state what learners are expected to already know. This shapes your starting point and helps you avoid teaching what they already have.

Example

‘Learners can use the past simple for finished actions’ is assumed knowledge for a present perfect lesson. State it explicitly.

Try

For your next lesson, write one sentence of assumed knowledge. Then design a brief diagnostic activity to check it holds.
