Idea — Correction in writing can be direct (give the form), indirect (mark the error), or metalinguistic (name the error type). Indirect is often more effective.
Example — Underlining an error forces the learner to find and correct it — more cognitive work than receiving the answer. More work, more retention.
Try — Mark one set of writing using only underlining. Ask learners to self-correct. Note which errors they can fix and which they cannot.
