ELT365 · Day 155 — Why Gist Comes Before Detail
Idea — A gist task builds a global frame before the detail task fills it. Without that frame, learners try to process everything at once and process little.
Example — ‘What is the speaker’s main feeling?’ anchors the listener. ‘List five specific complaints’ then has a framework to attach to.
Try — Play a short audio. Gist task: one-sentence summary. Pause, discuss. Play again for specific detail. Notice what changes on the second listen.
