ELT365 · Day 152 — What ‘receptive’ means in ELT
Idea — Receptive skills are listening and reading — skills where learners receive and decode language rather than produce it. Understanding them is the first step to teaching them well.
Example — A student reads a news article: she receives and processes the text. That is receptive. When she writes a response, it becomes productive.
Try — List two activities you have used for listening and two for reading. Which asked for gist? Which for detail?
