ELT365 · D171 — Extensive Reading: The Power of Reading for Pleasure

July 14, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Extensive reading means reading for pleasure at a level that feels easy — graded readers, comics, websites. Quantity over analysis. Research is clear: it builds vocabulary and fluency.

Example — A B1 learner reads a graded reader a week — no tasks, no comprehension checks, just reading. Six months later, their lexical range has visibly grown.

Try — Ask learners to read one text outside class this week that they find genuinely interesting. No tasks. Report back: one thing they noticed or enjoyed.
