ELT365 · D168 — Skimming: Reading for the Main Idea in 60 Seconds

July 13, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Skimming is reading for overall meaning in minimum time. One pass, one question, one answer — what is this text about? Not what does every word mean.

Example — Give learners 30 seconds to skim a newspaper article. Can they say: topic, viewpoint, conclusion? That is skimming done.

Try — Find a 300-word text. Set a 30-second timer. Ask: what’s the main argument? Debrief: what did learners look at — title, first lines, last paragraph?
