🤔 I Disagree, But…

⏱ 5 minutes · 📚 CELTA-informed · 🎯 Cambridge B2

📖 From the teacher’s desk: Managing multicultural teams in Sydney’s hospitality industry meant navigating strong opinions — about menus, rosters, service standards — every single day. In my mixed-ability classes in Brittany, I noticed that students from some cultures found polite disagreement in English extremely difficult. The language of respectful pushback is one of the most socially important skills in English.

🎯 By the end of this lesson, you can: disagree politely and constructively in English without sounding rude.

🔥 Warm Up (1 min)

Your colleague says: “We should always agree with the customer, even when they’re wrong.”
Do you agree? How do you respond — politely but honestly?

📖 Learn It (2 min)

Soft disagreement toolkit:

Phrase Effect
“I see your point, but…” Shows you listened first
“That’s a fair point. However…” Acknowledges before countering
“I’m not sure I agree with that.” Gentle, tentative disagreement
“With respect, I think…” Formal and firm but respectful
“Actually, couldn’t it be argued that…?” Uses a question to soften
⚠️ Never say: “You’re wrong!” or “That’s stupid!” — these close the conversation.
✅ Always: Acknowledge + Disagree + Explain + (Suggest)

✏️ Try It (2 min)

Rewrite these responses to be more polite:

  1. “No. That won’t work.” → _______
  2. “You’re wrong about that.” → _______
  3. “That’s a bad idea.” → _______

Discussion: “Working from home is always less productive than office work.” — Disagree politely using at least 2 phrases from above.

🗝️ Answer Key
  1. “I see your point, but I’m not sure that approach would work in this context.”
  2. “That’s an interesting view. However, I think the evidence suggests otherwise.”
  3. “I appreciate the suggestion. With respect, though, I wonder if we could consider…”
