ELT365 · Day 203 — Phonics for young learners — the basics

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Phonics teaches the relationship between letters and sounds systematically. It is the most evidence-based approach to building reading in young learners of English.

Example — Teaching that sh makes one sound /ʃ/ (ship, shop, she) before learners try to read connected text prevents guessing and builds decoding confidence.

Try — Find one phonics activity targeting a sound your young learners regularly confuse in their written work.
