ELT365 · Day 202 — Paragraph structure for B1+ learners
Idea — A functional paragraph has three parts: a topic sentence that states the main idea, supporting sentences that develop it with examples or reasons, and an optional closing sentence.
Example — Topic: ‘One advantage of remote work is flexibility.’ Support: ‘Employees can start earlier or later, which reduces commuting at rush hour.’ The example earns the claim.
Try — Give learners a mixed-up paragraph: topic sentence, two support sentences, one irrelevant sentence. Ask them to remove the irrelevant one and reorder the rest. Debrief: how did they decide?
