ELT365 · Day 173 — Listening for Attitude and Opinion
Idea — Beyond facts and details, proficient listeners track how a speaker feels about what they are saying. Attitude markers (tone, hedging, stress, discourse markers) carry meaning that the words alone do not.
Example — Play a speaker discussing a topic they clearly dislike. Ask: how does the speaker feel? How do you know? Learners identify markers: tone, word choice, pausing.
Try — Next time you use a listening, add one question that asks about attitude, not content: ‘How does the speaker feel about X?’ Discuss how learners know.
