ELT365 · Day 172 — The One-Listen Gist

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Learners should hear a listening text once for gist before any detail work. Repeated listening without a task trains dependence, not skill.

Example — Play a short recording. Ask: ‘What is the general topic?’ One listen. One sentence answer. No transcript yet.

Try — Set a gist listening task. After one listen, collect answers. Discuss only what the recording was about — nothing more.
