My daughter was eighteen months old when she pointed at the flamboyan tree outside our window in Saint-Pierre, La Réunion, and said something that sounded like red. She was right — those flowers are a blazing red-orange. Children learn colours before almost anything else. They don’t learn rules first; they notice the world first.
